There was a packed house at the launch of Fleadh Cheoil na Contae in Ionad Teampall Chróine, in Dungloe, on Wednesday night. Those gathered said they were excited the county fleadh would be coming to the town.
A flyer outlining events that are due to take place over the course of the weekend showcases a jam-packed exciting schedule of events which runs from 11am on Friday until late Sunday evening.
The fleadh will take place in Dungloe from May 10 until May 12 and will attract competitors, musicians, singers, bands and cultural enthusiasts from across the county. Fleadh Cheoil na Contae took place in Dungloe in 1981, 1982, 2002 and 2003.
Oifigeach Pleanála Teanga BSG an Chlochán Léith, Gráinne Nic Niallais, thanked local people, the business people of the town, committee members and the organisations who are collaborating with them to ensure the festival is a huge success. The Derrybeg-based native Irish speaker was instrumental alongside members of the committee in bringing the fleadh to Dungloe, this year.
The manager of Forbairt na Rosann, Helena MhicLaffertaigh, took to the stage to announce the winner of the logo design competition, Clara Bonner, who was given high praise by all those in attendance.
The President of the Meenacross Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann branch, Christopher Ó Dochartaigh, took to the stage and outlined the exemplary tradition of Irish music, song and culture that continues to thrive in the area. He added that the people of the town are accustomed to hosting major events and referenced the fact that one of the most successful festivals in Ireland, the Mary from Dungloe International Arts festival takes place in the town on an annual basis.
Launching the fleadh officially Carl Ó Dochartaigh spoke about all the town has to offer from its picturesque beaches to the rich cultural tapestry that is woven into the very heart of the town. He acknowledged Gráinne Nic Niallais’ unwavering commitment in bringing the fleadh to Dungloe.
He outlined the economic benefits that the event will bring to the town and thanked those who have already committed to helping them in any manner. He also invited anyone or any business who would like to help them to contact them.
Fianna Fáil Councillor Anthony Molloy who was present for the launch spoke of how important such events are to small towns and villages: “It is great to see the fleadh come to Dungloe. It is an event which celebrates our culture and our language and it is nice to see it return once again. I wish it every success."
There was traditional Irish music and sean-nós dancing at the launch and a wonderful atmosphere was enjoyed by all.
