A garden in memory of the late Fianna Fáil Councillor Noreen McGarvey where people can sit and reflect was one of the proposals made at the Glenties Municipal District (GMD) this week.
This week, councillors, Donegal County Council staff and officials paid tribute to their friend and colleague, Cllr McGarvey, who passed away last December.
Cathaoirleach of the GMD, Michael McClafferty, asked that a minute’s silence be observed in respect of the late councillor ahead of the meeting. He said it continues to be a difficult time for all those who knew and loved Cllr McGarvey.
Fianna Fáil Councillor Anthony Molloy said Cllr McGarvey had been a huge help and support to him when he was first elected to DCC, in 2019. Describing her ‘as a breath of fresh air,’ he said she was involved in many different aspects of the community.
He said she leaves behind a void that will be difficult to fill both in Dungloe and Lifford.
Sinn Féin Councillor John Shéamais Ó Fearraigh said Cllr McGarvey will be missed for many years to come and described her as having a magnificent sense of humour and being involved in all facets of the community.
Sinn Féin Councillor Marie Therese Gallagher said Cllr McGarvey was a diligent and hard worker who spent a lot of time working in the background on many projects. Cllr Gallagher said that when you cast your eye over the notes from previous meetings you could see how measured and sensible she was.
Independent Councillor Micheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easbuig said it continues to be difficult to talk about the passing of his late colleague. He said that Cllr McGarvey was a valued councillor who brought people together. He also said she had a great love for the Irish language. He said it would be fitting that a photograph of the late councillor be erected in the chamber and a garden named after her.
Area manager Michael Rowsome said the idea in relation to the garden was a positive one and that matters concerning photographs were being addressed. He said that working with the late councillor had been easy as she was exceptionally respectful and easy to work with.
The Director of Water and Environment, Michael McGarvey, said a few words on behalf of the senior management team. He said it had been a pleasure to work with the late Cllr McGarvey whom he said was never cross and was enjoyable to work with.
All council members, officials and staff offered condolences to the family, the extended family and friends of the late councillor.
