Sinn Féin will run three candidates in the local elections in the Glenties Municipal District (GMD).

Brian Carr and Cllr John Sheamuis Ó Fearraigh were put forward at the Gweedore convention and a third will be selected in due course, with the public expected to go to the ballot boxes on a date in June.

"Brian and John are two candidates that we know very well,” Teachta Pearse Doherty said. "We know these are two candidates who will not be scared to roll up their sleeves to get work done.

"They are steeped in their local communities and will make terrific representatives for the Glenties LEA.

"They will also be joined by a third candidate in this area and together this will represent a very strong Sinn Féin team going forward to contest the local elections in June.

Sinn Féin Councillor Marie Therese Gallagher previously announced she will not be contesting the upcoming local elections. The councillor has represented the people of the GMD since 2007 and has served as Cathaoirleach of the GMD during her tenure.

"I also want to take the time to speak about out-going councillor Marie Therese Gallagher. Marie Therese is Sinn Féin's longest-serving county Councillor ever in the county and her dedication to the party and her community over that time has been incredible."
