Daniel O'Donnell famously joined Donegal manager Jim McGuinness and the entire panel on stage the night they took Sam Maguire back to the Diamond back is 2012.

“Somebody told me that Jim McGuinness does a rare version of ‘Destination Donegal’,” the popular singer said in front of an estimated 20,000 as the raindrops crackled off the green and gold umbrellas. Although initially a touch reluctant, McGuinness made his way to the front of the stage. “Holy mother of God,” he replied as he grasped the microphone.

Their duet was considered by the wider world was merely a proud expressionism of where they were from. They recited 'Destination Donegal' which went down brilliantly and two years later, they were there again although more in pride than in celebration as Kerry had defeated Donegal in the All-Ireland final.

Michael Murphy was Donegal captain for both of those finals and yesterday announced his retirement from inter-county football after 16 years with the senior side and his immense contribution did not go unnoticed by one of the county side's biggest supporters.

"I just want to wish Donegal GAA captain Michael Murphy the very best of luck as he retires from inter-county football," Daniel O'Donnell posted on facebook. "You have brought so much joy to the people of Donegal over the years playing for your county. Wishing you well in all you do for the future and thanks for the memories.
