Dolmen walk on 40th anniversary of Archaeological Survey of County Donegal

There are few people in Donegal who haven’t at some stage browsed the pages of the Archaeological Survey of County Donegal.

This beautiful and informative book has graced the shelves of classrooms and libraries throughout the county since its publication in 1983. It is considered an excellent reference book for researchers and historians, and is enjoyed by anyone with an interest in finding out a bit more about their local area.  

The Archaeological Survey of County Donegal is much more than a list of monuments or local curiosities. It paints a picture of how life evolved in Donegal, from the earliest settlers thought to pre Christian times, early Christianity, various invasions, life under the penal laws, and up to the 17th century.

The book cover features a picture of Kilclooney Dolmen and so it is fitting that its author Dr Brian Lacey will visit the dolmen as part of the anniversary celebrations.

Donegal GAP Heritage and History Group is organising the event at the Dolmen Centre, Kilclooney, Portnoo (Eircode F94 DN83.) The Dolmen Centre committee has kindly agreed to host the event in the centre. Admission is free, with donations gratefully accepted. 

The walk to Kilclooney Dolmen with Dr Lacey on Saturday, June 3, starting at 4pm. 

A spokesperson said: “We are delighted that Dr Brian Lacey will join us for a walk to Kilclooney Dolmen and a talk on the stories and tales in the making of the survey.”

Booking is not necessary.
