Red Hugh O'Donnell was a 16th-century Irish clan chief and a legendary symbol of Gaelic resistance against English rule

The next meeting of the Ballybofey, Stranorlar & District Historical Society features an insight into the life of Red Hugh O'Donnell.

The Society's members meeting will take place on Monday, April 27, from 7-8pm, and at 8pm in the Henderson Hall (F93 XV29), Stranorlar, Eddie Crawford, who is the Chair of the Red Hugh O’Donnell Association, will give a talk on the life, death and legacy of O'Donnell, the work of the Irish Spanish Association, and the ongoing search for Red Hugh’s burial site at Valladolid.

Red Hugh O'Donnell was a 16th-century Irish clan chief and a legendary symbol of Gaelic resistance against English rule. As the Lord of Tyrconnell, he was a central leader during the Nine Years' War, a massive rebellion that nearly ended Elizabethan control over Ireland.

"This promises to be a very interesting talk," organisers said. "The talk is free and is open to everyone. Membership of the Historical Society for 2026 is now due, which is €10 for the year. This can be paid on the night. The latest edition of the Historical Magazine will be on sale on the night as well as a number of back issues."
