An amazing line up at the Abbey Centre in Ballyshannon in March

The Ballyshannon Musical Society will stage Oklahoma between March 1 and Saturday, March 5 at the Abbey Centre in Ballyshannon.

This version of Oklahoma has been re-orchestrated and will be showcased in a 21st-century style.

Set in Western Indian Territory just after the turn of the 20th century, the spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the backdrop for the love story between Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a beautiful farm girl. The road to true love runs anything but smooth and people remain at the edge of their seats in hopes that the two will ride off into the sunset.

All My Sons

Two new dates has been announced for All My Sons, a play by Arthur Miller. These two shows will take place on Sunday, March 6 at 4pm and 8.30pm.

Joe Keller, the patriarch in All My Sons, desperately wants to secure and maintain the financial security and legacy he spent so many years building, ready to hand it down to his surviving son, Chris. At the same time, Joe’s wife Kate is still waiting for their eldest son Larry to return from war, determined that he is alive and will marry the former girl-next-door, Ann -the daughter of Joe’s former business partner who is sitting in prison, punished for Joe’s crimes. To complicate this family drama, Chris and Ann are in love and want to get married.

In All My Sons, Arthur Miller creates a post-war American family in a tragic downfall of lies, greed, love, and loss, and demands its audience examine their own social responsibilities to all the sons of American wars.

Redemption of a Rogue

If you prefer the silver screen to watching drama on stage you will not be disappointed as on Wednesday, March 9 at 8pm Redemption of a Rogue will feature.

After seven years in exile, prodigal son Jimmy Cullen (Aaron Monaghan) returns home to Cavan to make peace with his dying father. Within moments of Jimmy’s arrival, the old man breathes his last and the heavens open. All that remains is to organise the funeral, except his father’s will stipulates he cannot be buried on a wet day, otherwise Jimmy and his brother will be disinherited. And it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop raining anytime soon.

Winner of both the Best Irish First Feature and Best Irish Film awards at the 2020 Galway Film Fleadh, this film debut from award-winning playwright Philip Doherty paints a darkly comic and surreal picture of small-town life in rural Ireland.

Time-Lapse

Organisers at the centre are delighted to announce that  ‘Time-Lapse,’ a solo exhibition by Maria Noonan-McDermott will take place until March 22.

Artist and Poet Maria Noonan-McDermott presents a moving and heartwarming visual and literary portrayal in her new touring solo exhibition ‘Time-Lapse’.

This exhibition is an ongoing project that Maria has been unwittingly working towards over a number of years while helping care for her mother living with Alzheimers.

‘‘The complex extended grief of Alzheimer’s with it’s untethering of time and the archaeological uncovering of the entire life of a parent that arrives with their death. All this creative exploration of grief, loss and love will be reflected through Maria’s paintings, her poetry and installation.’’

Funding has been awarded by The Irish Hospice Foundation supported by The Creative Ireland Programme, with additional funding awarded by Leitrim County Council.
