Donegal sealed a second All-Ireland U-21 title in 1987 when they wore a very dark yellow - almost orange - in their replayed win over Kerry 1-12 to 2-4 at Roscommon's Hyde Park. The original fixture had finished all square in Tuam, 1-7 to 0-10.

Conaghan, a close confidant of Mick O’Dwyer, often turned to the Kerry legend for advice. The green-and-gold hoop design - while similar to one Donegal had worn previously - was partly a tribute to O’Dwyer’s Golden Years team.So committed was Conaghan to the colour scheme that when Donegal met Kerry in a 1988 league game in Tralee, he refused to switch kits. Instead, it was the Kingdom who donned the blue of Munster - on their own turf. It was Donegal's first ever win over Kerry, coming on a 1-10 to 0-11 scoreline.

With Brian McEniff back at the helm, Donegal won their fourth Ulster SFC title in 1990, with a narrow 0-15 to 0-14 victory over Armagh in Clones. Donegal celebrated afterwards with some of the players having swapped jerseys with Armagh players.

In the 1990 All-Ireland semi-final against Meath, both counties were forced into change strips due to a colour clash: Donegal wore Ulster’s yellow and black, while Meath adopted Leinster’s green and white. It was an era before sponsors or kit manufacturers’ logos - only a Donegal crest and a Guaranteed Irish mark adorned the jersey. Meath won 3-8 to 1-6, but would lose against Cork in the final, with the Rebels having won the Liam McCarthy Cup two weeks’ beforehand.
