Football match was abandoned early in second half

Donegal’s Competitions Controls Committee (CCC) will meet this week to discuss the abandonment of an Under-21 football championship match on Sunday.

The game between Burt and Urris was played at Hibernian Park and had been rearranged after Saturday’s orange wind warning caused the original fixture to be postponed.

Burt led by 2-5 to 0-1 at half-time after playing with the wind, and had extended their lead to 12 points when referee Janey McCauley called a halt to proceedings midway through the second half.

The Moville referee said she abandoned the game because of verbal abuse from visiting supporters, players and management.

The Donegal CCC has received the referee’s report from the U21C championship match and will meet later this week to consider the matter.

Where a game is ‘prematurely terminated’ - rulebook-speak for abandonment - the CCC has substantial discretion over the penalties it can apply, including fines, suspensions, awarding the game to either team, or ordering a replay.

Both clubs will be waiting anxiously to learn the outcome of the CCC’s deliberations.
