Seven Things: On the road with a selection of Donegal's scenic drives

From rugged headlands to its beautiful heartland, Donegal really does have it all

Fanad Drive

The twisting climbs and descents of the Knockalla Stage of the Donegal International Rally has shone a spotlight on this fantastic stretch of road.

And if there is one road trip on this list that reflects all that is wonderful about Donegal, it is the Fanad Drive. From the stunning Ballymastocker Bay and Portsalon - which has been named as one of the nicest beaches in the world - on towards Fanad Lighthouse, and back to the beautiful heritage town of Ramelton and the Lennon estuary, it really is breathtaking.

Along the signposted circuit of the Fanad Peninsula, there are no end of great spots to stop and enjoy the scenery and to take stunning and dramatic photographs.

There are several beaches, some great mountain views, quiet villages, and lovely places to eat, drink and sleep if you wish to use it as a base for a Donegal holiday.

And if you are looking for activities to make a day of your trip to Fanad, you can enjoy water based activities such as sailing and kayaking, or take time out for a round of golf on some of the peninsula’s top class links courses.
