Donegal's first Ulster title of 1972 - like a Phoenix from the Flame

Peter Campbell speaks to team manager Brian McEniff to mark Donegal's great breakthrough in winning their first Ulster SFC 50 years ago this weekend and details on a player-by-player basis those who helped make the achievement possible

Frankie McFeely (MacCumhaill's)
I grew up playing alongside Frankie McFeely. He was asked into the Donegal senior panel in 1961 but his father felt he was too young at 18. He was a great block of a man, powerfully strong and aa great man to jump for a high ball and also very adept at delivering a pass.

He played for Ulster in the Railway Cup as a 19-year-old and won three Donegal senior championships with MacCumhaill's in 1962, '63 and '64. He also won again in 1971 and because of that he was appointed Donegal captain.
He was a quiet leader, a very inoffensive man. One thing I remember from the opening game against Down in 1972, we were three points up in Ballybofey and time was almost up. Down pushed Dan McCartan up the field and I remember Anton Carroll calling to 'take anything above the grass'. McFeely went up and won the ball and that was the winning of the game.
Frankie worked with Accountants Oliver Freaney and Co in Dublin and still lives there.
