Donegal's first Ulster title of 1972 - like a Phoenix from the Flame

Peter Campbell speaks to team manager Brian McEniff to mark Donegal's great breakthrough in winning their first Ulster SFC 50 years ago this weekend and details on a player-by-player basis those who helped make the achievement possible

Declan O'Carroll (Bundoran)

Declan was brought up just across the road from me and came through the ranks from De La Salle. He was a very accomplished footballer playing minor, U-21 and senior for Donegal.
After his secondary education, he joined the Army and went to the top. Declan gave a lot of service to Donegal as a forward, but even more as a midfielder. He was very accurate with his left boot and was important to Donegal taking frees from the right side. He retired far too early from county football.

Declan won three Ulster U-21 medals as well as the Ulster SFC in 1972 and he was central to the great St Joseph's teams although joining the army saw him miss out on the first success in 1965. Now retired from the army, Declan lives in Letterkenny.
