Donegal's first Ulster title of 1972 - like a Phoenix from the Flame

Peter Campbell speaks to team manager Brian McEniff to mark Donegal's great breakthrough in winning their first Ulster SFC 50 years ago this weekend and details on a player-by-player basis those who helped make the achievement possible

Joe Winston (St Eunan's)
I came across Dodo (Joe Winston) playing for St Eunan's against St Joseph's. He was deadly accurate and a great dead ball kicker. He was just a natural talent with a lovely sidestep. He was definitely the funny man of the team. He referred to Andy Curran once, 'you wouldn't make a waistcoat for an All-Star'. There was a great rivalry between St Eunan's and St Joseph's but that was not a factor with Joe.

His contribution of 0-27 over four games to win Ulster in 1972 cannot be overstated; scored 0-10 of Donegal's 0-12 in first Cavan game and 0-9 in the replay.

Went on to make a big contribution to Donegal at a coaching level with minors and U-21s, unfortunately losing an Ulster U-21 final in 1981 and but for a club dispute could have been still manager in 1982. Won three Donegal senior championship medals with St Eunan's. Sadly Joe Winston passed to his eternal reward in 2021.
