Off the beaten track: A selection of stories from last week's championship

The Donegal SFC got underway last weekend in glorious sunshine with eight matches dotted around the county with the IFC and junior competitions seeing their second rounds of action. Here’s a look at some of the things that might have caught your attention

How many times over the past 10 years have we read reports of club championship games involving Killybegs where Hugh McFadden has been their top scorer? It happened again on Sunday last when he notched 2-6 - despite being in the sin bin for 10 minutes! For Killybegs he is given a front foot role, anywhere from midfield up and he has come up with the goods, both from play and from placed balls.

When you look at his role at county level, it seems completely different. He is playing a defensive midfield role, breaking up attacks and moving the ball around. Rarely do you see him in a forward position and the amount of times he puts himself in position to have a shot at goal are minimal.

Given the success he had once again last week with Killybegs it would be good to see given that responsibility going forward. He scored 2-3 for Donegal in 2020, 2-2 in the league and 0-1 in the championship, but his scoring stats for Donegal would not be anywhere near his exploits for his club. Memo to the new manager! PC
