Off the beaten track 2: A selection of stories from last week's championship

Here’s a look at some of the things that might have caught your eye during the respective club championships matches over the last week or so

Burt's football rising
Mention Burt and what’s the first word that comes to mind. ‘Hurling’, surely. Indeed! Burt have long since been categorised as hurlers, natural perhaps given their rich history in the sport. Hailing from the neighbouring parish, ‘Burt’ and ‘hurling’ were two words that just went hand-in-hand.

Over the last decade, though, Burt’s footballing heart has beaten as strong as it ever has. In 2016, Burt - a small club, catchment wise - won the club’s first IFC title and spent a period in the senior ranks. Under former dual star Ciaran Dowds this year, the Hibernian men have advanced again.

The Division 3 title was the cherry added after securing promotion and they remain alive and kicking in the IFC with a winner-takes-all game at Gaeil Fhánada this weekend. Burt’s standing in the GAA goes deeper than hurling. Something they maybe don’t get enough credit for. CMcN
