Off the beaten track: Stories from the latest round of championship

The Donegal SFC reached round three last weekend while the IFC group stages finished, so here's a few things you might've noticed

The men in white coats
Was in Dunfanaghy on Sunday where Enda McFeely refereed the Senior Championship meeting of St Michael’s and Naomh Conaill.
The St Mary’s, Convoy official, who has become one of the leading referees in the county, brought a full complement of four umpires with him to The Bridge. An effort late in the first half brought a brief debate. McFeely consulted with his men at the posts. Decision made and on we rolled with the game.
It felt almost a striking moment given what is the norm these days.
McFeely was able to take the advice of his own men. Whether the decision was correct or incorrect, he could trust the opinion without pause. Many referees don’t have that luxury and there have been some instances of angst over decisions in recent weeks.
Indeed, there have also been flashpoint with one umpire removed from his sentry at the IFC meeting of Red Hughs and St Mary’s on Saturday evening by referee Connie Doherty.
It would be a stretch of finance, as they would have to be compensated in some way, but has the time come where four neutral umpires, like referees and assistants, are required for all Championship fixtures?
