It was a lovely sunny day and the Lady Captain had opted for a shotgun start with two teams of four on some of the 18 tees. The course was in excellent condition. Lady Captain Geraldine had a cup of tea /coffee for everyone before heading out to their starting holes.

During the round, having been given fruit and water at the club, scones and biscuits were brought around the course on a buggy to the players. On completion of the round, the ladies were treated to a glass of prosecco/juice and canopies. A Ladies and men’s 9-hole competition was played in the afternoon. That night, the ladies and guests had a delicious three-course meal, thanks to the chefs and staff in the club restaurant.

Addressing the gathering Lady Captain Geraldine welcomed the members, staff, family and friends. She said every lady captain has said it is an honour and a privilege to be the lady Captain of Donegal Golf Club and she certainly would agree with them.

Her mother Ita O'Connor, was Lady Captain of Donegal Golf Club 49 years ago. Lady Captain Geraldine moved to England in the early 70s. She and her husband Hugh returned to their native Donegal in 2016. She said little did she know when her Mam used to take her out to hit a few balls many years ago that she would one day be standing in Donegal Golf Cub Murvagh as the Lady Captain. Initially on return from the UK, she found it very difficult adjusting to a links course but she persevered and is now getting to even like the 8th hole and accept its challenges.

Lady Captain finished her address with a thank you to everyone that had contributed and was part of her wonderful year. Her fellow golfers who supported all her event’s during the year, Patricia Britton who had persuaded her to accept the position of Lady Captain, her Vice-Captain Margaret Hynes always at her side, her committee who worked tireless behind the scenes.

Miriam Bennett the Competition Secretary and her sub committees who ensured her Captains day ran smoothly, the team Captains and the teams who she congratulated on their success to date. She thanked Donegal Golf Club Captain Darren McDaid, the President Tom Geraghty, and the Management Committee, the clubs new General Manager Lynn McCool and the extended team of greens shop office bar and restaurant.

She wished the clubs PRO Leslie Robinson all the best in his forthcoming retirement with a special thanks for all he had done for the members over the years. Lady Captain Geraldine finished with a thank you to her husband for all his support and understanding during her year. And to all of her family who had travelled to join her on the day also her two very best friends who had travelled from the UK for this special occasion.
