In Pictures: Donegal Town parade a warm celebatration of people and place

The weekend marked the beginning of the Donegal Town 550 birthday celebrations

An immense community effort led to a very colourful and celebratory parade in Donegal Town. And it was fitting that as the town celebrates its 550th birthday, Scoil Aodh Rua Agus Nuala which is named after the town's founders was crowned overall winner. Many aspects of the town's history were represented in the school's entry, from the founders to battles with English soldiers, the writing of the Annals of the Four Masters, to traditions of sport, music and dance.

It was a poignant victory for the Scoil Aodh Rua Agus Nuala community who were reeling from news that recently retired Principal Mary Culleton had died on Friday following a short illness. The school community certainly did her proud. A minute's silence was held in her memory.
