There was a huge turnout of past pupils, parents neighbours friends and staff. Inside, old photos which had been kept by past principals were displayed for all to see. People reminisced together as they watched their relatives in times gone by on large digital screens, which really brought the photos to life.
Outside, the schoolyard was decked out with banners and balloons announcing the Centenary Celebration.
The beautiful food was catered by Furey's Diner. A gorgeous cake was baked by local lady Theresa O'Brien and many other sweet treats were provided by staff and locals alike. The special guests on the day, Paddy Boyle (93), and his sister Ita Boyle Sweeney (88), are the oldest surviving students of Killian NS residing locally.
Paddy and Ita unveiled a piece of batik artwork, in the school's Peace Garden. The wall hanging was designed amnd created by past and current pupils of Killian N.S. as the culmination of an art project supported by County Donegal Education Support Centre. The banner displayed the salmon of knowledge, ( the school's emblem), and the years of the school's Centenary 1924-2024.
Vibrant live music was provided by The Killian Band, which was enjoyed immensely by the large crowd. They were ably supported by Cathal Gallagher, Brian Hilley and Chris Cassidy.
The principal, Siobhán Mc Groarty spoke briefly about the school's history and thanked the organising committee for their stellar work. Fr James Sweeney blessed the school grounds and spoke about the importance of diversity and inclusivity in education and how a small school can offer so much to a local community.
The school choir, wearing their brand new school hoodies, sang a song composed by the students themselves. The children were thrilled to receive a huge round of applause as they ran off to play on the Bouncy Castles. The good weather greatly contributed to everyone's enjoyment of the celebration and a great family day out was had by all.
