Fr Seán Ó Gallchóir described the founding of the club in 1931 and made particular reference to two of the club's heroes, Hiúdaí Beag and Neilly Gallagher, who won the Ulster Championship in 1974 with Donegal.
Life membership was also awarded to Dhónall Ó Breisleáin, Ownie Beag Mac Giolla Bhríde agus Packie Mac Fhionghaile, Dónall Ó Breisleáin, Ownie Beag Mac Giolla Bhríde and Packie Mac Fingale. Bríd Gallagher won a Christmas basket sponsored by Siopa Mací.
A brief History of Gaoth Dobhair GAA club - published in 2016 - outlines the early days: “The club was founded one night in November 1931, rather accidentally. Following the production of a play, a meeting had been held to form a drama group, and at the meeting, it was suggested by a man named Charlie Owenie that a Gaelic football team might as well be formed as well.
“Dan Maloney was named as Chairman, other members were Mickey the Cope Gallagher, Dominic Johnnie, Joe Friel, Charlie Friel and Antoin Delap.
“A deal was struck with Mairead Frank and it was agreed that her house be used for Committee meetings from then on. A team was formed in the late 1931, early 1932, but according to the players of that era even though they were playing senior football they were really only a good junior team. The first County title to come into the parish of Gaoth Dobhair was a Minor title in 1933.”
