A new original musical based on Donegal’s All-Ireland triumphs in 1992 and 2012, Hometown Girls, made its debut in Glenties. Hometown Girls is a brand new show with original country and folk songs set against the backdrop of Donegal’s All-Ireland victories in 1992 and 2012, that tells the story of three childhood friends Grainne, Meabh and Niamh), their lives, loves and heartbreaks and the town they were brought up in, across the span of 20 years. Writer Billy McInnes said: “This is my first musical. I have lived in Donegal for over 20 years and this is my opportunity to try and give something back to this great county and its wonderful people based on things that they love and appreciate.
“As well as being my first musical, it’s the directorial debut for my wife, Maria, who was born and raised in Glenties and has acted in many local productions.”
The musical showcases the sheer joy felt by the people following Donegal’s all-Ireland triumphs. Not only can it lay claim to being one of the first musicals about Donegal winning the All-Ireland but it is also probably one of the first to feature completely original country and folk songs (this is not a jukebox musical).
The musical was staged at the Market Hall, Glenties on April 10, 11 and 12.
