The production, directed by Bill Muench, is based on the friendship and links between Waylon Whitedeer, a Choctaw native American artist and Don Mullen, the Derry historian.
The relationship between them was formed by their mutual interest and work, studying the links between the Irish people and the Choctaw nation, particularly the gift of $170 presented to the Irish people by the Choctaw people in 1847, not long after their displacement and their long walk on the trail of tears.
The pupils had the chance to play music within the production and were given this opportunity due to the long-standing links and history between Gaelscoil na gCeithre Máistrí and the Choctaw people of Oklahoma.
These links were formed almost 20 years ago by past principal, Seosamh Mac Suibhne, and his work included Art exhibitions with Jones Academy Oklahoma with the help of artist, Waylon Whitedeer. He also worked closely with Don Mullen over the years. Waylon produced a wonderful painting celebrating this connection, a painting that is on permanent display in Donegal Castle.
The production also included a musical performance from musicians Steve Cooney and Doimnic Mac Giolla Bhríde in Donegal Castle. The pupils of Gaelscoil na gCeithre Máistrí really enjoyed the opportunity to perform.
