Watch: ‘The crystal-clear waters provided a perfect window into the past’

Newry and Mourne Sub Aqua Club travelled to Donegal to view the SS Laurentic

A marine club enjoyed “an unforgettable day” diving out of Buncrana to the SS Laurentic.

Newry and Mourne Sub Aqua members Ultan O'Lorcain, Aaron Rooney, Stephen Brothers and Adam Gonnelly, who kindly shared his photos, travelled to Donegal to view the shipwreck.

The SS Laurentic was one of a pair of sister ships, a British transatlantic ocean liner that was launched in 1908. In 1917, German mines sank the Laurentic off the northern coast of Ireland.

Newry and Mourne Sub Aqua Club had a 40-minute bottom time with over 20 meters of visibility where Laurentic’s wreck lies.

“The dive conditions couldn't have been better – with stunning weather and over 20m of visibility, we were able to explore the wreck in incredible detail,” Newry & Mourne Sub Aqua Club posted.

“The SS Laurentic, a true Donegal classic, revealed its fascinating history and abundant marine life, making it a dive to remember. From the moment we descended, the crystal-clear waters provided a perfect window into the past, allowing us to see the remnants of this iconic ship up close.

“Schools of fish darted around the wreckage, and the sunlight filtering through the water added a magical touch to the whole experience. We're already looking forward to our next trip back to Donegal to dive into more of its amazing wrecks. A big thank you to everyone who made this dive possible – can't wait for the next adventure.”
