The film titled Star Wars : Starfighter is slated for a May 28, 2027 release date
Young Irish actor Flynn Gray from Dublin has been cast in the Star Wars : Starfighter, the next installment of the iconic sci-fi franchise. The news came as part of an announcement from Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Studios stating that production on the film has now begun.
Disney released their first look at the film showing an image of 14-year old Gray in a black and white photo alongside Ryan Gosling. Oscar-nominated Gosling is best known to audiences for his roles in Blade Runner 2049, Drive and Barbie.
Gray's previous credits include Irish TV series 'Borderline' and Netflix phenomenon 'Wednesday' starring Jenna Ortega. The Dubliner will also be starring in an upcoming young people's series titled 'Show Kids' which is due to start next month. It will air on RTÉ One and the RTÉ Player from September 14 at 5:10pm.

Gray joins an impressive cast for the next Star Wars film which includes six-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams (Arrival, Enchanted) Matt Smith (Doctor Who, The Crown) Mia Goth (Everest, Emma) Aaron Pierre (Old, Rebel Ridge) and Simon Bird (The Inbetweeners, Friday Night Dinner).
Star Wars: Starfighter is an all new standalone adventure. Disney say the film is an entirely original story set in a period of time never before explored in Star Wars. It will be released theatrically on May 28, 2027 and directed by Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine, Night at the Museum).
Speaking on the announcement, Levy said "I feel a profound sense of excitement and honour as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter. From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars Galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally".
The 'Free Guy' director also spoke about the impact the franchise has had on him as a filmmaker stating "Star Wars shaped my sense of what a story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime".
The film will be produced by Shawn Levy and Kathleen Kennedy. The executive producers are Ryan Gosling, Dan Levine, Mary McLaglen and Josh McLaglen with the script being penned by Johnathan Tropper.
Starfighter will be the first Star Wars film released since 2019's 'The Rise of Skywalker'. The beloved sci-fi franchise created by George Lucas has been one of cinema's greatest success stories since it's first installment was released back in 1977.
Star Wars: Starfighter will release in cinemas on May 28, 2027.
