Donegal School of Shotokan Karate Mary Lynn O'Neill
It was a proud moment for Sensei Mary Lynn O’Neill this week as she took part in the WUKF Scottish Open Karate Championships and picked up four medals.
Mary, of Donegal School of Shotokan Karate, competed against experienced karate athletes from around the world. She earned a silver medal in Kata and three bronze medals in Kumite, including two in the Ippon category and one in Sanbon.
The competition featured over 1,100 entries from 41 clubs across seven countries. Despite having no team members alongside her, Mary managed to place 20th in the overall club rankings, ahead of many larger clubs.
“It was a big experience,” she said. “I was just proud to be there and to represent Donegal.”
She thanked her mother, Frances O’Neill, for her support on the day, as well as Martin and Finn Cole from Limavady Karate Club for their guidance.
Mary also acknowledged the support and encouragement shown by other competitors and officials, in particular Mandy McNulty of the North West Shotokan Karate Club.
