Car park needed at Dunkineely following Main Street accidents

Cllr Michael Boyle proposes car park following four accidents since Christmas 2025
Cllr Michael Boyle told colleagues at the July monthly meeting of the Donegal Municipal District that a car park was needed in Dunkineely following a spate of accidents in 2026.
At the meeting, Cllr Boyle spoke to the Area Manager for Roads and Transportation, Mark Sweeney.
He said: “In Dunkineely since Christmas, there have been four accidents on Main Street. People are giving out about it. It is not enticing people to come to Dunkineely to do business.
“What is needed is a car park.
“To attract a lot of coffee shops and businesses, but when there is no car park, people are not going to come to it. Can we do something about it?”
Sweeney responded: “You mention a car park is needed. It would be welcome if we could get a car park, as it would get parking off the street, but we would need funding for that.
“It starts with the source of funding to see what the options are out there.”
Referring to previous councillor comments regarding speed in Dunkineely, Sweeney continued: “We are only proposing to leaving it at 50kph, so if you think about making it 30kph, you would need to propose submissions.
“Now, Dunkineely is quite long, and 30kph is quite slow. The parking in Dunkineely is acting like a traffic measure. If you remove all the parking off the street, you would have a clear way.”
