Cllr Michael McMahon said casual trading at Atlantic Way was ‘unacceptable’

Casual trading on Bundoran’s Atlantic Way was unacceptable, heard the Donegal Municipal District during July’s monthly meeting.

Bundoran-based Cllr Michael McMahon asked the Area Manager for Roads and Transportation, Mark Sweeney, who was responsible for the enforcement of casual trading in Bundoran and the rest of Donegal.

Sweeney replied that it wasn’t something his department dealt with, but he would help in whatever way he could to deal with the situation.

Speaking to Donegal Live after the meeting, Cllr McMahon said: “What I did bring up was the constant casual trading on the Atlantic Way, and it is a very dangerous situation because it is a busy roadway there. A lot of people are standing around, and it is an accident waiting to happen.

“I just wanted to find out exactly who is responsible for enforcement.

“There is no licence for the town of Bundoran. If you want to do casual trading, you have to go to Tullaghan Strand, but these people seem to just come along and set up where they want to set up, and it is not acceptable because everybody in Bundoran was paying their rates and taxes, and looking after their premises.

“These people are coming in free, and I am not happy about that.

“Casual trading of any kind is not acceptable in Bundoran, because the people are paying their rates and taxes, living there 365 days a year, and when the summer comes, they deserve to get what is coming to them, not just the people dropping in for a couple of weeks during the summer.

“It should not be allowed to continue.”
