Breaking: Man (30s) arrested after spate of thefts from vehicles in east Donegal

The arrest of the man came following a search in response to a number of incidents in the Convoy, Raphoe and Castlefin areas at the weekend

A man has been arrested following a spate of theft from cars in east Donegal at the weekend.

The man, who is aged in his 30s, was arrested on Tuesday. The man is currently detained at a Garda Station in Donegal under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

An Garda Síochána have confirmed that the arrest of the man followed a search of a premises in the Letterkenny Garda District on Tuesday morning.

The search and arrest comes after a number of incidents in the Convoy, Raphoe and Castlefin areas under the cover of darkness.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí are issuing a renewed appeal for information, to anyone who may have witnessed any unusual activity or vehicles in the Convoy, Raphoe and Castlefin areas over the weekend of Friday 19th – Sunday 21st January 2024.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Letterkenny Garda Station on 074 916 7100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.”

In Convoy, a theft from a car in Ballyboe took place in the early hours of Saturday, January 20,  approximately between midnight and 6am. The car was unlocked and had been parked overnight in the driveway of a house when entry was gained to it. During the theft, a sum of cash and a purse containing cards was stolen from the car. 

Gardaí were contacted by a number of residents of Sessiagh Park, Castlefin concerning recent attempted thefts from their vehicles. The attempted break-ins occurred between midnight and 6am on Saturday, January 20.  The vehicles were all unlocked and entry is believed to have been gained, although nothing was stolen.

A theft took place at The Common, Raphoe. Entry was gained into a van and a handbag, a purse, a sum of cash and some shopping vouchers were stolen from within. No damage was caused to the van. This theft occurred In the early hours of Sunday, January 21 between midnight and 9.30am.
