Three drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol last week in Donegal and six more drivers across the county on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drugs

An articulated truck driver was arrested in Donegal last week on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drugs.

Over the course of the past week in Donegal, three drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol. One of these drivers was already disqualified from driving.

Six drivers were also arrested across the county over the past week on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drugs - one of these drivers was the one driving the articulated truck and another of these drivers was disqualified from driving.

An Garda Siochana in Donegal has warned there will be high visibility patrols, speed checks and checkpoints over the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend and urges all road users to act responsibly.

“The road safety message is not being taken seriously by everyone and that needs to change,” A garda spokesperson said. “We have to work together to prevent serious injury collisions and tragedies on the roads.

“Slow down and ensure that you remain within the legal speed limit at all times. Never drive while under the influence of alcohol/drugs. Ensure that you and any passengers that you have are wearing your seatbelts. Do not use/hold a mobile phone while driving.

“Our priority is to keep people safe and we urge everyone to make responsible decisions this weekend and always in relation to road safety. We hope you all have an enjoyable and safe Bank Holiday weekend on and off the roads.”
