Inspector Sean McDaid makes return to Buncrana Garda Station

Garda Inspector Sean McDaid has returned to Buncrana following the recent changes in the force in the county.

Inspector McDaid was based out of Glenties Garda Station since his promotion to the rank of Inspector last October.

Now, the Clonmany native is back at the Buncrana station.

Solicitor Mr Ciaran Mac Lochlainn formally welcomed Inspector McDaid back to Inishowen.

“We are delighted to have him back on home ground,” Mr Mac Lochlainn said. “There has been a massive reconstruction of An Garda Síochána in the county. We are delighted to see Inspector McDaid back in Buncrana and we wish him well.”

He also wished Inspectors Paul Gallagher and Johnny Sweeney well ahead of moves to Letterkenny and Milford garda stations.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham noted that there was “quite a bit of movement” in the garda ranks lately. 

“I’m delighted to welcome Inspector McDaid back to this area,” Judge Cunningham said. “Inspector McDaid was also available before me in the Glenties District and I’m delighted to see him back to this area.”

Judge Cunningham also passed on her good wishes to Inspector Gallagher and Inspector Sweeney. 

Inspector McDaid said: “I would like to thank everyone for their kind words and I look forward to locking horns with Mr Mac Lochlainn again. The mafia is back in action!”

Last year, Inspector McDaid replaced the outgoing Inspector Rosaleen Logue in the Glenties Garda District.

Previously, he was a Sergeant based at Buncrana Garda Station and acted as the court presenter at sittings of the local District Court.

A motorbike enthusiast, Inspector McDaid was previously a member of the Traffic Corps.

From the end of April, a new model rolled out with Donegal now split into two community engagement areas, Donegal South and Donegal North, functional areas, replacing the old model of four Garda Districts -  Letterkenny, Buncrana, Milford and Ballyshannon. 

All garda stations and former districts have been aligned to a community engagement functional area.

Each division now comprises four functional areas: community engagement, crime, performance assurance and business services. Each area is led by a Superintendent or acting superintendent with the exception of the business services functional area, which is led by an assistant principal.
