A unique ‘empowering salon professionals’ event took place in Donegal this week.

The occasion was organised by HSE Ireland Social Inclusion, in partnership with An Garda Síochána, Donegal Domestic Violence Services (DDVS) and the North West Regional Drug & Alcohol Task Force.

It has been acknowledged that salon professionals are uniquely positioned to support individuals experiencing domestic violence, coercive control, and addiction.

The event was designed to equip salon owners and employees with the necessary knowledge and tools to identify the signs of abuse and addiction and to appropriately signpost individuals to support services.

It was noted that salon workers can often see clients more than most professionals and their trust can actually help to save lives.

The speakers on the day at the Silver Tassie Hotel included Detective Inspector Siobhan Mollahan, Donna Mc Gee (HSE Addiction Services), Carol Mc Cann (Clinical Nurse Specialist - Addiction Services), Cora Harvey (Assistant Director of Nursing - HSE Addiction Services) and Dr. Marie Hainsworth (CEO of Domestic Violence Services).

A spokesperson said: “By fostering awareness and equipping salon professionals with the right information, this initiative aims to create safer spaces within the community, where individuals facing these challenges can find help and hope.”
