Sinn Féin Councillor Gary Doherty
A County Councillor says that graffiti sprayed on a St Johnston road is ‘not representative’ of the people in the east Donegal village.
Residents and business people in St Johnston were left irate after a spate of wanton vandalism in the early hours of Saturday.
Some sectarian and anti-immigration graffiti was daubed on the road at Church Lane, close to the junction with the R265, the main Lifford-Derry road.
Signage for a local business and Donegal County Council signage in the same area was defaced in the incident which occurred under the cloak of darkness.
The front door of a residential property was also attacked in a similar manner.
“I was disgusted to learn of the vandalism and racist/sectarian graffiti which has appeared in St Johnston over the weekend,” Sinn Féin Councillor Gary Doherty said.
“I would appeal to those who have done this to please stop and think about the consequences of your actions.
“You are intimidating people and making them afraid to live in their own village. Why do that to fellow human beings? Please stop.
“St Johnston is a great village filled with good, decent people. These acts of hatred are not representative of the vast majority of the people of the town.”
Councillor Doherty said he has sent images of the graffiti to the Council and hopes it will be cleaned “as soon as possible”.
One business person told Donegal Live that the local community “won’t take this lying down”.
They said: “I was absolutely horrified to see this in the morning on way to work.
