Man stole house keys from former partner, Donegal court hears

Ballyshannon Courthouse

A man has been fined for theft of house keys belonging to his former partner.

Eamonn Bonner, 32, of Castletown, Dunkineely, was before Ballyshannon District Court. He admitted stealing house keys valued at €50 from a home in Ballintra on April 15, 2023. The offence is contrary to Section 4 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud OFfences) Act 2001.

A further charge of criminal damage was struck out by consent between all parties after compensation was paid.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham asked the defendant if he wished to have the matter dealt with in the district court, or before judge and jury in the circuit court. Bonner opted for the district court, and he pleaded guilty to the theft.

Inspector Dermot Treacy told the court that the house in Ballintra had been shared by the parties at the time. Bonner left the house but later entered with a key and removed some items, which were subsequently returned. The theft of the keys was the only outstanding matter.

Solicitor Tom McSharry said his client had no previous convictions for theft, and he acknowledged that it was a very serious matter.

“My client makes a full genuine heartfelt apology," he said. “I would say that it was unfortunately a relationship that broke up. My client is very sorry for what happened.

“I would ask that the court be as lenient as possible.

Judge Cunningham noted the mitigating circumstances. She imposed a fine of €300.
