Tammy Caruana, inset, was arrested in Malta while simultaneously Gardai raided properties in County Donegal
A woman arrested in Malta as part of a probe into a €1 million online fraud with links in Donegal has been remanded in custody.
Garda detectives carried out raids at a number of properties in County Donegal on Tuesday, February 3, as part of the investigation. Some electronic devices were seized and are said to be “of evidential value”.
Although Gardai made no arrests, their investigation is “ongoing”.
The operation in Donegal coincided with a swoop of Police in Malta, who arrested two people linked to the raids here.
Tammy Caruana, a 25-year-old unemployed woman, has been charged and has been refused bail.
Caruana is the main suspect of Police in Malta, who believe that she operated a scheme that saw her impersonate a financial institution.
Around 200 people are understood to have been defrauded in the scheme which was investigated by Malta Police’s financial crimes investigations department. The Garda National Economic Crime Bureau (GNECB) were involved in coordination with Europol, as well as authorities in the United Kingdom.
Investigators have identified scores of victims who have lost significant amounts, totalling around €1 million.
Caruana, who was arrested along with her 82-year-old grandfather, has been linked to an international criminal network that is believed to have tentacles in Donegal.
Among the charges faced by Caruana are that she was part of an organised crime group and criminal association.
She stands accused that she used illegal means, false names and deception to impersonate a bank. She was alleged to have executed acts of money laundering with the charges aggravated by the fact that elderly or dependent people were targeted.
Police in Malta seized around €8,000 in cash as well as mobile phones and other electronic devices. The woman’s assets habe also been seized and frozen.
After a bail request from Caruana’s legal team, Magistrate Farrugia Frendo denied the application and Caruana was remanded in custody.
