Donegal murder accused remanded in custody as DPP directions awaited

The man charged with murding popular Donegal businessman Stephen McCahill has been further remanded in custody.

Letterkenny District Court was told that directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) are not ready yet in the case of Michael Maloney.

The 32-year-old Maloney appeared by videolink from Castlerea Prison, where he has been on remand since January.

Garda Sergeant Jim Collins said the investigation is ongoing but that the directions in the case are not ready.

Sergeanr Collins sought a four-week remand, until March 9, for the directions.

Judge Emile Daly adjourned the case for directions.

The accused man was represented in court by Sligo-based solicitor Mark Mullaney.

Maloney, of Loughros Point in Ardara, did not speak during the short appearance.

Maloney is charged that on January 5, 2026 at Beagh, Ardara, he did murder Stephen McCahill.

The charge is Contrary to Common Law and as provided for by Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1964.

Mr McCahill, a 66-year-old father-of-two, was killed at his home at Beagh, Ardara in the early hours of Monday, January 5.

Maloney, his nephew by marriage, was arrested a short time later and charged with his murder at a special sitting of Letterkenny District Court.
