A Letterkenny man found in possession of €140 worth of cannabis has been fined in court.

Stephen Mongan was caught with the illegal drugs after Gardai spotted him acting suspiciously.

Sergeant Jim Collins told Letterkenny District Court that Mongan, a 32-year-old, of Foxhills, Letterkenny, was searched by officers, who were on patrol.

At 8.30pm on October 8, 2025, at Knocknamona, Letterkenny, Mongan was searched under the Misuse of Drugs Act. Gardai located seven grams of cannabis on his person, the drugs having a street value of €140, the court heard.

Mongan made admissions that the cannabis was for his own use and was said to have been “fully cooperative”.

Sergeant Collins told the court that Mongan has a number of previous convictions, mainly for public order matters. He was previously ordered to 80 hours of community service.

Mongan’s solicitor, Mr Patsy Gallagher, said his client was currently on a residential drug treatment programme at St Francis Farm in Tullow, Co Carlow. As a result, he said his client would be “out of commission” for a couple of months.

“He went into treatment after realising that he had a difficulty,” Mr Gallagher said.

Judge Emile Daly convicted Mongan and fined him €150, allowing eight months to pay.
