Sr Eileen Haughey will be sadly missed by the St Catherine’s Mercy Community in Ballyshannon and the wider Mercy Community of the Northern Branch
Sr Eileen Haughey “gave her life” to the local diocese, as her Funeral took place took place at St Patrick’s Church in Ballyshannon.
A wake was held at Sr Eileen’s family home in Teelin on May 20, before another reposing was held the next day at St Catherine’s Convent of Mercy in Ballyshannon, where she had served. Her burial service was held afterwards in the Abbey Assaroe Cemetery.
Parish Priest, Fr Patrick Dunne said that Sr Eileen “fell in love with God and gave her life to God,” and “shared her heart with so many others in a very practical, kind and gentle way.”
He commented: “In 1960, she made her first Profession (of Vows) and she served with God and her community in St Catherine’s for most of her life. She also worked in Glenties Hospital and the boarding school as well. She gave her life to the diocese.
Fr Dunne commented that Sr Eileen loved to go back to her home “to the beautiful Teelin where her heart was.”
He continued his praise of Sr Eileen, saying: “She was a hard worked, especially in the early days. Sr Eileen had that gentle, joyful presence with her heart full of gratitude. She didn’t complain and was very thankful.
“Many would say in the parish that she was always a pleasure. A pleasure to be with and a pleasure to meet because she had that inherent respect for each person.”
Sr Eileen Haughey will be sadly missed by the St Catherine’s Mercy Community in Ballyshannon and the wider Mercy Community of the Northern Branch, her brother Sean and her sister Brid, her brother-in-law, nieces, grandniece and extended family and friends.
