A Donegal motorist has been clocked driving at 119km/h in an 80km/h zone.

The driver was caught doing nearly 40km/h over the speed limit on the R265 St. Johnston Road on Thursday, October 22.

The speeding motorists have been highlighted by a Garda Roads Policing Operation taking place this bank holiday weekend from Thursday, October 22 until Tuesday, October 27.

Nationally, over 650 drivers were detected for speeding offences, and 18 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs within the first 24 hours of the operation.

Another 95 drivers in the country were detected holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.

An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority are urging all road users to support their efforts to keep people safe on the roads this October bank holiday weekend.

An Garda Síochána is urging road users to be mindful of and take extra care around vulnerable road users, in particular pedestrians and cyclists.
