The search for missing American tourist Kelly Jones was diverted to Kilcar for a time today, after a report was received of a possible sighting there yesterday.

According to Cllr. Brendan Byrne, the search area today also included parts of Ardara.

“There’s a feeling now that, even though she didn’t have a car, the missing woman may have gone out of the Glencolmcille area, to Kilcar or Ardara, as there was a report today that she may be have been in Kilcar yesterday.”

Brendan Murray of Donegal Mountain Rescue said this turned out to be a “false alarm”.

He added: “A woman matching Kelly’s description was in Kilcar, but this was a foreign national who works and lives there.”

The search returned to the Glencolmcille area late this afternoon.

Mr Murray said that the volunteers from Donegal Mountain Rescue regrouped at Carrick Garda Station and “have been tasked with searching the coast and shoreline from the Glen area to Malinmore until Thursday”.

Ms Jones father was understood to be travelling to Ireland today from his home in Georgia.

Ms Jones, who was born in Texas and currently lives in Charleston, South Carolina, had been in the Glencolmcille area for a number of days before she went missing.

She was last seen at the hostel she was staying at in Malinmore on Friday afternoon and the last confirmed sighting of her was in Glencolmcille on Saturday at around 5.30pm.
