The HSE is planning to cut the number of beds in St. Joseph’s Community Hospital in Stranorlar by 20 per cent despite the increasing demand, and has cited the moratorium on staff recruitment as the main factor for their decision.
The Democrat has seen documents which outlines plans by the HSE to cut the bed capacity. The documents state: “the proposed changes are required with immediate effect and will effect most areas in the hospital.”
Speaking yesterday evening, Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty said: “I have viewed the proposal by the HSE which sets out the plans to reduce the current number of beds in the hospital from 75 to 60.
“This is despite the fact that the number of admissions to the hospital have increased by over 20 per cent in the past two years, from 593 in 2010 to 724 in 2012.”
