Donegal documentary maker Alison Toomey has won yet another medal for her work, this time on a three-part documentary series called ‘The Moon is an Orange Triangle’.

This wonderfully insightful and funny documentary series follows the lives of six autistic children and their familes in Donegal.

The series was first broadcast on Highland Radio, and recently went on to win a gold medal at the New York Festivals International Radio Programs and Promos Awards 2013.

Alison and her husband Garry Keane live Barnesmore and own the successful TV production company Real Films. Their work has been nominated for six IFTA’s and they have won three in the last two years, an achievement that deserves bundles of recognition.

In the making of this series, documentary maker Alison Toomey, a graduate of the Film Course in IADT, spent six months living with the families, learning about autism and questioning our pre-conceived notions of normality.

“This is a very real, human series, which tells the stories of three families who live positively with autism every day,” Alison told the Democrat.

“Through their openness and frank honesty, their optimism and calmness, I got to to see a completely different picture and I began to disregard most of my pre-conceived ideas about autism…totally.”
