Donegal Town journalist wins top award

A Donegal Town man has won one of the more prestigious awards in journalism for an article on the judicial system in Ireland which examined how judges are actually hired.

Mark Tighe from Water St. in Donegal Town works with the Sunday Times. He won the Justice Media Award in the Sunday Newspapers category for his feature ‘You’re Hired’ which examined how judges are appointed in Ireland and his article was praised as “a challenging article which pulls no punches on this important subject”.

Mark is no stranger to awards. Back in 2006 while still a student at NUI Galway won the SMEDIA award for best student journalist of the year for his article on the social networking site, Bebo. He has also won the Justice Media Award on two previous occasions.

Educated at Royal and Prior in Raphoe, Mark describes himself in his blog as a person who mainly focuses on legal affairs saying, “I mainly cover legal affairs but anything that is interesting, quirky and newsworthy is always likely to grab my attention.”

The Donegal Town man is presently in Poland with the Green Army but has been tweeting interesting snippets to all the fans back home on his Twitter account.

Always the newshound, he was quick to capture the photograph of President Higgins arriving at Dublin Airport to catch the Ryanair flight to Poznan and his most recent comment indicated that, despite the defeat against Croatia, the Irish fans were still in great form in Poznan.

He did say however, that there was a general consensus that the team were in “denial about how badly they played against Croatia”.

No doubt we will be hearing a lot more from this prolific Donegal man.
