The staff of Magh Ene College gathered to celebrate and pay tribute to their friend and colleague, Joe O'Neill, on the occasion of his retirement after a teaching career of 34 years.

Magh Ene College said Joe “has left a lasting imprint on our school community and beyond” and wished him well for the future.

They posted: “Over the years, Joe has worn many hats with grace, commitment, and an unshakable sense of purpose: as a teacher of French and History, a Home School Liaison Officer, a Gaelic Football coach, and the guiding hand behind our Student Council. In the classroom, Joe inspired generations of students to see the world through a new lens - to appreciate the beauty of the French language, and to understand the lessons of history that shape our present and future.

“Joe's teaching was never just about facts or grammar, but about curiosity, empathy, and critical thinking. As Home School Liaison Officer, Joe built bridges between school, home, and the community. With understanding and compassion, he supported families, ensured that every student had a voice, and worked tirelessly to make education accessible and inclusive for all. That quiet but profound dedication to people — especially to those who needed it most — stands among Joe's greatest achievements.

“On the field, Joe brought the same enthusiasm and leadership to Gaelic Football that he brought to the classroom. Under his guidance, countless young players developed not only their sporting skills but also the values of teamwork, respect, and perseverance.

“Through his mentorship of the Student Council, Joe encouraged students to engage actively in school life, to represent their peers, and to believe that their opinions mattered. This influence will continue to shape our student body for years to come.

“Joe’s career is a testament to what education truly means — not only the transfer of knowledge, but the nurturing of potential, the building of community, and the shaping of lives. As Joe retires, we offer our deepest gratitude for his years of service, friendship, and inspiration. We wish Joe and his family every happiness and fulfilment in the next chapter — one richly deserved after a lifetime of dedication to others. Go raibh míle maith agat Joe for everything!”
