A 12-year-old boy suffered life-changing injuries after a firework exploded in his hand, while fireworks and anti-social behaviour were reported across Buncrana on Halloween night.

A 12-year-old boy has been left with life-changing injuries after a firework exploded in his hand in Buncrana on Halloween night.

Emergency services were called to the Marian Park area of the town shortly after 7pm on Saturday following the incident, which left the young boy with serious injuries to his hand and face.

Paramedics from the National Ambulance Service, members of An Garda Síochána and the Fire Brigade attended the scene.

The boy was subsequently taken by ambulance to Letterkenny University Hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, Buncrana Gardaí were inundated with calls relating to anti-social behaviour across the town on Saturday evening.

Groups of teenagers were reportedly setting off bangers and fireworks in numerous areas of Buncrana, with several people on the Main Street being struck by them.

Fireworks were also reportedly thrown at cars and placed underneath parked vehicles, raising further concerns about the dangers posed to members of the public.

100% Redress councillor Joy Beard said she was “very sad to hear” about the young boy who was injured in the incident.

“This is a worrying reminder of the dangers posed by fireworks. In a split second, they can cause severe burns, permanent injuries and life-changing harm to those handling them or standing nearby.”

“Please speak to your children about these dangers, know where they are and make sure they do not have access to fireworks.”

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána confirmed that “enquiries are ongoing” into the circumstances surrounding the incident involving the injured boy.
