Dungloe’s target has to be promotion back to Division 1 - Dessie Gallagher

Defeated Donegal SFC finalists last term, Gallagher agrees that the Rosses Park outfit need to get back to the top tier in the All-County League sooner rather than later

Dungloe’s target has to be promotion back to Division 1 - Dessie Gallagher

Dungloe boss Dessie Gallagher

Dessie Gallagher was a happy man last Sunday evening following Dungloe’s five-point local derby win over Naomh Muire, Lower Rosses, in Rosses Park.

But the Dungloe boss insisted afterwards, despite the local derby nature of the fixture, that the most important thing was that Dungloe had another two precious league points.

Dungloe won on a scoreline of 5-5 to 0-17. Cianan McSaid, Shaun McGee, Patrick O’Donnell, Darren Curran, and Aaron Ward scored the goals.

“I know that game takes on a life of its own, but the most important thing was to win the two points,” insisted the Dungloe boss at the final whistle.

“I know we got the goals and were comfortable enough winners. We had plenty of possession, but we did not always use it well.

“We gave away the ball too easily at times with slack passing, and we made simple mistakes.

“In fairness, we are just coming out of preseason training, and it is a matter of getting lads back on the pitch and building for the summer.“We’ve had a number of lads carrying knocks and injuries, and they are only coming back.

“Daniel Ward and Conor Greene got a few minutes today. It is two years and two months since Daniel last played. He played a reserve game last week to get him back into it.

It is good to have him back. Conor picked up an injury in one of the early games in the year, and it is a matter of time to ease him back in slowly.

“We still have a few more to come back. It is all about building a good, strong panel and seeing if we can push on from last year.”

Sunday’s win was Dungloe’s sixth win on the spin after losing their opening game to Aodh Ruadh, in Fr Tierney Park.

We lost the first day in Ballyshannon. It was a very windy day, and it was a game that could have gone either way.

“But we have won all our games since, and it is a matter of building on every win and moving up the table.

Hopefully, if we can keep winning games, we will be in with a good chance of promotion.

But as we know from last year, all you have to do is pick up a number of injuries, and it could set you back.

“You can never look too far ahead. There are a number of good teams in the league, and they are all eying promotion too.”
