It was a good weekend for Alex McCalmont and Four Masters with an important second win in the Donegal senior championship and the corner-forward also began his work career on Monday morning.

Four Masters had something to spare in their 0-20 to 1-11 win over Glenfin in Tirconaill Park and are now guaranteed a place  in the last 12 of the championship. Corner-forward McCalmont played his part in the win with five of their first seven points and he finished with six in total.

There was no resting after the game as he was on his way to Dublin where he started a new teaching job on Monday morning.

The graduate from University of Limerick was pretty happy with the result of the game against Glenfin but also knows that there are no guarantees in championship football.

“It was grand. Listen we’re trying to get the right men in the right places to put the ball over the bar and luckily enough I got in that position a few times in the first half. But we don’t look at that; as long as there’s a blue shirt putting it over,” said McCalmont, after the win on Sunday.

It was an important win for Four Masters who started with a home win over St Naul’s before losing out to Termon the following week at the Burn Road.

“We felt like we haven’t got going properly yet. We felt like that was the first game where we have put everything together. We came together and discussed the things we need to work on and I think it showed there today in that performance.”

On Sunday they held a five point lead at the break and that was extended to 10 at one stage in the second half before Glenfin got a late goal to  put a better look on the scoreboard.

“We were just told at half-time by the boys to keep the heads and keep the ball moving and keep tipping over the bar and we did that. We had 20 points there so we can be happy with that and we left a few goals behind us too. We would be very happy with our shooting today.”

Overall, it has been a steady start for Barry Dunnion’s charges. There has been another big input of young players after the success of recent minor teams, so there is a lot of talent available.

“I  would be a couple of years ahead of them. We’re just trying to blend everyone in. We have about four or five new men in that starting team so it is just about getting to work together and trying to play together. And you can see there today it’s starting to click a wee bit better.”

McCalmont has just finished college in Limerick and is now getting ready for his work journey. “I’m starting teaching in Dublin so I have a long trip down the road this evening. Hopefully I will be able to make it back at weekends for training and games. I’m well used to it going up and down to Limerick,” he says.

And as for working for a living, he quips: “This day comes for everyone.”
