Former senior player Gary Wilson rolled back the years at the weekend with a man of the match performance for Sean MacCumhaills in the Donegal SFC C final.

The outgoing Sean MacCumhaill’s senior manager and former Donegal U-21 player kicked seven points in the 2-11 to 1-9  victory over St Eunans in Pairc Naomh Columba, Glenswilly on Saturday afternoon.

“It is always good to win a championship regardless of the grade. I played for 20 years and I failed to win anything so for that reason it was nice to win today,” said the Sean MacCumhaills number 11 afterwards.

“It is especially nice to win it here in Glenswilly given it is the inaugural year of the Manus Kelly Memorial Cup in memory of the great Glenswilly sportsman Manus Kelly who won the championship as a player manager a number of years ago.”

The centre-half-forward’s three two point frees in the opening half laid the foundation for the MacCumhaills victory and helped them to a 2-6 to 1-2 half-time lead. Anthony Gallagher and Martin Mbuili scored the MacCumhaiill goals.

The half-time lead gave us a bit of a cushion alright. But being honest the half-time lead was not concerning me at half-time. I was more worried if my legs would last out the game.

“I left the Monaghan Training Centre at 10 o’clock this morning and only got here at a quarter to twelve, just 15 minutes before the throw-in.

“So it was not the best of preparation and I didn’t get to do a warm-up so I was really concerned that I wouldn’t last the game.

“But the subs that came on in the second half gave us fresh legs and the pace to move the ball fast and thankfully we held on to win. And I held on to finish out the game.”
