Gaoth Dobhair's Kevin Cassidy has announced his retirement from Gaelic football.
Kevin Cassidy has hung up his boots for the final time after announcing his retirement on his social media on Monday.
Cassidy and Gaoth Dobhair’s reserves were edged out in Sunday’s SFC B decider by Aodh Ruadh.
And with the club’s first string defeated in the SFC A final by Naomh Conaill on the same day, it was a disappointing afternoon all around for the Magheragallon men.
At 42-years of age, Cassidy can look back at a glittering career for both club and county. And even though his fallout with Jim McGuinness denied him an All-Ireland title in 2012, he still possesses two All-Stars, a NFL title and an Ulster SFC medal.
Indeed, Cassidy has the proud distinction of being the only man to win All-Stars in his first and last seasons as an intercounty player, 2002 and 2011.
He picked up three SFC titles with his club but there is no doubt 2018’s Ulster club title win will go down as his personal highlight.
Speaking on Twitter, alongside a photo of himself and his family going down the MacCumhaill Park tunnel, Cassidy said: “You win some, you lose some but we had some journey all the same since 1998.
“I will be eternally grateful for what Gaoth Dobhair GAA gave me. The future is bright”.
