Donegal talent take centre stage for DCU but lose to Queen's in dramatic finale

Despite St Eunan's Shane O'Donnell landing two points for the Dublin-based university, it was not enough as Tyrone’s Luke Donnelly scores winning point in the dying seconds

Donegal talent take center stage for DCU but lose to Queen's in dramatic finale

The Sigerson Cup had a Donegal presence in Belfast where Queens University overcome DCU by 1-10 to 2-6 in the opening round.

Termon star Jamie Grant togged out at left-half back for DCU and St Eunan’s and Donegal's Shane O’Donnell started right-half forward, while Downings' Johnny McGroddy was introduced in the second half.

Glenfin's  Ross Marley was also on the panel for DCU, while Four Masters’ player Senan Quinn was on the squad for the winning side.

After Luke Donnelly and impressive DCU midfielder Matthew Costello traded goals late on in the match, this fixture appeared destined for extra-time.

Yet there was just enough time left on the clock for Tyrone marksman Donnelly to set Queen’s up for a forthcoming clash against the winners of today’s match between SETU Carlow and TUS Midlands (DCU will face the losers of this contest).

O’Donnell landed two points in the match, one late in the second half which looked to spur it towards a DCU victory, but Queens regained control following Donnelly’s goal and it was again the Tyrone native who broke DCU hearts by coolly slotting over a close-range free in the 64th minute to win it for the northern University.
