Donegal's U-20 hurling team set for pre-season match with Derry

Donegal’s U-20 hurlers line out against Derry at Owenbeg on tomorrow morning, for the second of two pre-season challenges matches ahead of the 2024 Ulster League fixtures commencing Sunday week, with a trip away to Cavan.
Having led the county minor squad for the past two seasons, Adie Gaffey will this year take the reigns as the county U-20’s manager.
The squad have been training since November, with Gaffey’s coaching staff implementing a well-structured training program that focused on physical conditioning early on as well as building the team's tactical approach, making the most of the limited availability of some players during weekdays, with college commitments outside the county.
“The League is a development competition and we will use it to continue to build these young players ahead of the Hurling All-Ireland U-20B championship, with round 1 at the back end of March,” says Gaffey.
“There are six Ulster teams in that competition; Tyrone and Armagh being two which we will meet during the league between now and then. And with Derry on Sunday and Sligo last week, we’ll have a good idea of how we’re faring and what we need to work on come championship time.”
Meanwhile, the senior hurling team, who are away to Wicklow this weekend. The squad includes U-20’s player Peter Kelly, which demonstrates the quality of the young side even before things get going.
